The expanded 2026 World Cup introduces a knockout round that has never existed before — the round of 32 — fundamentally changing how teams approach the group stage.
Twelve Groups of Four
Each of the 12 groups contains four teams who play a single round-robin. The top two finishers in every group automatically progress. That accounts for 24 of the 32 knockout places.
The Best Third-Placed Teams
The remaining eight spots go to the best third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked by points, goal difference and goals scored. This means a strong third-place finish can still be enough to advance — raising the stakes in every final group match.
Why It Matters
For fans, it means more meaningful matches and fewer dead rubbers. For coaches, squad rotation and goal difference become strategic weapons from the very first whistle.
