Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, who nailed a peach basket to a gymnasium wall. Today it is one of the world’s most popular sports. Here’s how it works.
The Objective
Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting the ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which sits 10 feet (3.05 m) above the floor. The team with the most points when time runs out wins.
Scoring
- 2 points for a basket made inside the three-point arc.
- 3 points for a basket made from beyond the arc.
- 1 point for each successful free throw, awarded after certain fouls.
The Positions
Teams traditionally field a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and centre — though the modern game increasingly blurs these roles, prizing versatile players who can shoot, pass and defend anywhere.
Game Flow
Games are split into timed periods (quarters in the NBA). Teams must advance the ball by dribbling or passing, attempt a shot within the shot-clock limit, and avoid fouls — which can send opponents to the free-throw line and, in bulk, swing a game.
